13th Annual NILS to focus on effects of Sept. 11

January 29, 2002

The upcoming 13th annual National Insurance Leadership Symposium (NILS) will focus on the effects of the Sept. 11 attacks on the insurance industry and the actions taken to recover.

The symposium, which will be held on Feb. 10-12 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, will host a variety of speakers, including former CIA Director Robert Gates, San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, William Freund, chief economist emeritus of the New York Stock Exchange and John J. Byrne, chairman of OneBeacon Insurance Group.

The symposium comprises affiliates of the entire property-casualty industry, including primary carriers, reinsures and brokers. Co-sponsored by The Council, the American Insurance Association and the Reinsurance Association of America, the annual West Coast meeting brings the P&C market together in one place for an examination of the many challenges facing the insurance industry since the Sept. 11 attacks. Gates will open the conference with a keynote address titled “Terrorism: A New Face, A New World.”

Immediately following, a panel of leading industry financial analysts will discuss capacity of insurance companies after the terrorist attacks, both nationally, and internationally. Panelists will include Alice Schroeder, managing director of Morgan Stanley; Hugh Warns, vice president of J.P. Morgan Chase; and Vincent J. Dowling, Jr., co-founder of Dowling Partners Securities, LLC. Dennis Chookaszian, retired chairman and chief executive officer of CNA, will moderate the panel.

Day two will open up with an address by Byrne on the state of the P&C market. A discussion will follow regarding the impact of the attacks on the reinsurance sector, with a panel moderated by J. Bransford (Jake) Wallace, chairman emeritus of Willis Corporation and a former chairman of The Council. Panelists will include: Nicholas E.T. Prettejohn, CEO of Lloyd’s of London; Edward J. Noonan, president and chief executive officer of American Re-Insurance Co.; Nicholas Spaeth, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, Employers Reinsurance Corporation; and Patrick Mailloux, president and chief executive officer of Swiss Reinsurance America Corp.

Freund will deliver a luncheon address titled “After the World Trade Center: The Outlook for Business, the Economy and Wall Street”, sponsored by Lloyd’s of London. The afternoon panel will turn to the P&C sector’s capacity for recovery. Thomas J. Rodell, managing principal of Aon Risks Consultants, Inc., will moderate a panel focusing on lessons learned by the insurance industry in the aftermath of Sept. 11. Panelists will include Robert Shunk, chairman of Frenkel & Co. Inc.; William Smith, president and chief operating officer of Kemper Insurance Companies; and Jerome Karter, vice chairman of SCOR U.S. Corporation.

Mayor Brown will conclude the two-day event at the closing dinner with his perspective on new global challenges confronting major municipalities.

Symposium registrations are limited to members of The Council, RAA, and AIA. For registration, call Paula Karchner, director of meetings, (202) 783-4400.
