August 6, 2002

The Governing Board of the California Earthquake Authority announced the hiring of Elaine Bush, chief deputy commissioner of the California Department of Insurance, as the Authority’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Bush has served more than 20 years in a variety of administrative positions with California State government. In addition to serving as Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Insurance, Bush served in various positions for the Department of Alcohol & Drug Programs, the Department of Developmental Services and the Department of Social Services.

“Elaine was the unanimous choice of the Governing Board because of her strong leadership and managerial skills,” said CEA Governing Board Chairman Clark Kelso. “We are very pleased that the CEA now has a skilled and capable management team that can continue to grow this important organization.”

Bush has been a member of the American Management Association. She is a certified management training facilitator and a member of the California Drug Court Professionals Association. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Redlands.

“I look forward to working with the Governing Board, the CEA staff and other major stakeholders to make earthquake insurance broadly available and more affordable, ensure the CEA is financially strong to protect our policyholders and improve the earthquake mitigation program,” Bush said.

She is scheduled to assume her new position Sept. 1. Bush replaces former CEO David Knowles who resigned in December.
