Any party to this lawsuit should have to sign a liability waiver before being allowed to leave their home. Failure to sign said waiver should result in banishment from the community as well as forfiture of all property within the community to help fight stupid lawsuits like this in the future.
The real problem illustrated by this tradgedy is the willingness of ruthless trial lawyers to capitalize on any opportunity to collect, no matter how specious.
    Allow me to translate:
‘ “Our clients know that Mr. Weller played a role that has forever changed their lives. But, they strongly believe that the City of Santa Monica played an even greater, more critical role…,’ in lawyerspeak, means “They have more money and we lawyers need more money!”

Unfortunately, a tragedy had to happen to make the city understand that it is also the responsibility of the City to protect their Citizens. There should have a protective barrier to protect those poor people. Maybe the City will think twice when they decide to take short cuts with safety.

It was such a beautifully constructed piece of prose, I figured it was worthy of an encore!
