NAMIC Appoints Western Region State Affairs Manager

Former property and casualty claims adjuster, subrogation analyst and insurance attorney, Christian Rataj, has joined the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) as state affairs manager for the Western United States.

Based in Denver, Rataj will advocate on behalf of NAMIC member companies before state legislatures and departments of insurance in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

“Christian brings a successful operational and government affairs background to NAMIC,” said Roger H. Schmelzer, senior vice president-state and regulatory affairs department. “He is well-versed on the issues facing property/casualty insurers in the western United States and is an articulate advocate on behalf of our member companies.”

Schmelzer said that Rataj “will be instrumental to the pursuit of our national legislative agenda intended to reform state insurance regulation.”

Rataj practiced law in Denver for seven years, most recently as an associate litigation attorney with the law firm of Milan and Malara, P.C. He has taught business law as an adjunct professor at a number of colleges and universities in Colorado and has served as a contract lobbyist for American Family Insurance Co. for several legislative sessions in the state of Colorado.

“I am very pleased to join NAMIC’s strong and effective advocacy team and look forward to anticipating and responding to the needs of NAMIC member companies in the West,” said Rataj.
