Hamman-Miller-Beauchamp-Deeble Inc. Mourns Passing of Harlan Miller Jr.

E. H. “Harlan” Miller Jr. of Long Beach, Calif., has died. He was chairman of the board of Hamman-Miller-Beauchamp-Deeble Inc.

“Harlan was an incredible contributor to the industry and his community,” said Clark Payan, IBA West CEO. “He has inspired all of us with his legacy of leadership. He will be missed.”

Miller was born in Long Beach. He graduated from Occidental College in 1949 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He was extremely active in the community serving on many boards.

Miller began his career in insurance in 1953 when he formed his own business. He merged his firm with Clare Hamman to form Hamman-Miller Inc. In 1968 the firm merged with Earl Beauchamp to form Hamman-Miller-Beauchamp Inc. and merged again in 1973 with Michael Deeble to form Hammon-Miller-Beauchamp-Deeble, Inc.

Miller’s service to the insurance industry and IBA West was extensive. He was past president of the Long Beach Association (1972); member of the IIABA Education Committee 1974-77, chairman 1976-1977; he served on the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of California board of directors (now IBA West) from 1977-80; he served as president in 1985-86; he was the IIABC Ramsden Award recipient in 1990; his firm won the IIABC/Insurance Journal Agency of the Year Award in 1991. He was elected to the Executive Committee of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (Big “I”) in 1990 and served as president in 1994-95. He won the RIE Sharp Award in 1995.

In 1996, IBA West created the Harlan Miller Award for his exemplary record of service to his community and the association. The Harlan Miller Award is presented annually to a young agent or broker in California who demonstrates outstanding dedication to the political grassroots program of the Big “I”.
