Liberty Mutual Expands Options for Calif. Agribusiness

To provide more options for California food and agribusiness companies to find workers compensation insurance, Liberty Mutual Alternative Markets, part of the Liberty Mutual Group, and FSIM, Food Service Insurance Managers, have formed a partnership offering insurance to California employers with permiums of $50,000 or higher.

Liberty Mutual and FSIM have expanded their targets to include landscape gardening employers and golf courses/country clubs, in addition to its core classes of food processors/manufacturers, restaurants, grocery/retail stores, wholesale distributors, wineries, row/field crops, vineyards, orchards, berries, nurseries and florists.

Robert Gaffney, president of Liberty Mutual Alternative Markets, said FSIM has a bi-lingual nurse case management structure, which is very effective in controlling losses and easing claim settlement.

The most common injuries in the food and agribusiness industries – overexertion and falls – are the same as the top two leading causes of all workplace injury in the U.S., according to Liberty Mutual’s Workplace Safety Index. Overexertion and falls made up nearly 60 percent of all workplace injury and cost employers approximately $30 billion in 2003. The annual study tracks the causes and costs of the most serious workplace injuries and combines information from Liberty Mutual, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Academy of Social Insurance.

Agents and brokers interested in learning more about the insurance coverage should call John Stassi at FSIM at (916) 660-0267 or e-mail
