Calif. Workers’ Comp Institute Offers Case Law Seminar

The California Workers’ Compensation Institute has scheduled a one-day case law seminar for April 23 in Long Beach, Calif., and April 25 in San Francisco. The program will examine recent workers’ compensation case law in light of recent statutory changes to the system, and discuss appropriate negotiation and defense strategies for claims personnel, attorneys, hearing reps, and others with negotiating authority.

CWCI General Counsel Mike McClain, who will moderate the seminar, notes that this is the ninth consecutive year that the Institute has conducted its case law program. “All the legislative and regulatory reforms in recent years have dramatically changed the system, so the program will examine both old and new case law in light of the ongoing changes,” he said.

Speakers will include attorneys with experience on both the applicant and defense side, who will provide an overview of recent decisions and cover a wide range of topics, including how to defend the utilization review process and resulting medical decisions, proving apportionment; and permanent disability issues.

CWCI will present the seminar from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23 at the Grand Long Beach Event Center , and Wednesday, April 25 at the Omni San Francisco Hotel. Tuition is $395, with a discount available for employees of CWCI member companies. The fee includes a syllabus containing brief summaries of significant decisions with full citations. Preregistration and prepayment are required.

Continuing education units will be available for attorneys. The Institute also will provide certificates of attendance for those seeking credits to meet the new workers’ compensation claim administrator certification requirements, and for submission to the Association of Hearing Representatives of California.
