Nobody has ever really explained with sufficient facts how a drivers license improves driving skills. Don’t confuse “insurance” with “drivers license”. The fact is that the vast majority of drivers in this country have licenses, and they commit the vast majority of accidents. Also, who’s to say that illegal immigrants didn’t have a drivers license in their home country? If having a license makes a safe driver, why does this country still have so many accidents?
Likewise with insurance – having a license doesn’t equate to having insurance. States not known for an illegal immigration problem still have high percentages of uninsured drivers. Plus, are insurers going to issue a policy where they can’t pull a prior driving record? Will the price be cheap enough for illegal immigrants to purchase the coverage?
This entire subject seems to me to be nothing more than a “red herring” to distract from the true question – which is, what part of “illegal” don’t you understand?
I don’t understand how Gov. Richardson’s policy cannot be seen as a violation of the provisions in federal law that criminalizes behavior that aids and abets illegal immigrants.
As other states and cities pass laws that make their communities less hospitable to illegal immigrants, New Mexico can expect an influx of the illegals looking for more comfortable areas.
We need legislation that will terminate all federal monies going to local governments that create sanctuaries for illegals.
The problem I have with the article is that Richardson is saying that increased rates of insured drivers equates to public safety. Most foreign nationals don’t need a driver’s license from any US state, as long as they have a valid driver’s license from their home country. The problem is that, unlike in most other countries, a US driver’s license is used as an identity card. Undocumented immigrants aren’t trying to comply with insurance laws or even driving laws: they want a valid ID – that they can then use to get a phone, utilities, and maybe even a voter registration card. :-)

For the guy accussing Mr. Richardson’s mother of coming here to have her son born here, I would ask: were your ancestors always born here or did they come from some where else too? Many industries need workers and many labor intensive jobs are not being filled by American workers. As long as industries need workers people will come here to work. Once we build a wall and deport all illegals then we can regulate and police the influx. back to the issue at hand:
we can always say a glass is 1/2 empty or full. but when u truly look at labor, is it not the americans that are to blame? u told us that mexicans are taking jobs for less pay…..what are truly saying or not saying – is that we have so many folks that on welfare that could be working these jobs, but decided not to because they love the gift of money. $$ for no labor. if we get a job and do a good job at it, then their pay will increase.
now look at CHINA, they tried to bypass our standards and some of the companies looked the other way or did not test the items. and now, looks like they will have to find another place to produce these items. why not bring it back to the USA and increase the jobs w/in america. get folks out of poverty and off of welfare. again, it goes back to being legal workforce.

I am italian/irish/catholic. My beliefs tell me to be kind and compassionate with those less fortunate. This includes the poor illegal mexican laborer. I don’t care what you say, call me, or believe. There are many people like me in this country and this is why this is still a great country. My irish and italian ancestors came to new york illegally. Should I send their remains back to europe because they came here illegally like tens of million other immigrants?
At my agency I have many hispanic/mexican/central american/etc customers. These people are great. They are responsible pay on time and are nice to be around. I much rather be in their company than hear your sour complaints about calamity and bad news disaster stuff. My final advice to you is be thankful that you have a job that allows you to post here and be thankful that you have all you have because it can be lost quickly. Let’s have some humility here and start helping fellow neighbor!
