The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has selected San Francisco’s Edgewood Center for Children and Families as the official charity for its 2008 Summer National Meeting. This selection is part of the NAIC’s year-long charitable initiative to support organizations that focus on mental health issues.
“Every day, Edgewood helps abused and neglected youngsters turn tragedy into triumph,” said NAIC President and Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger. “I’m proud to support the good work of this worthy organization and help make a positive impact on San Francisco’s most troubled children.”
Edgewood is the oldest children’s charity west of the Mississippi. For more than 155 years, Edgewood’s residential treatment cottages have been a safety net for San Francisco’s children. The cottages provide the last local alternative to a locked psychiatric hospital or out-of-county placement for children with severe psychological and emotional challenges resulting from abuse, neglect and crisis.
However, without additional funding and coordination between city agencies, Edgewood’s residential program will close to San Francisco children on July 1. For more information, visit www.edgewoodcenter.org.
The NAIC’s charitable program began in 2003. It benefits local, non-profit charitable organizations in the cities where its quarterly national meetings are held.
