Alaska Changes Property and Casualty Insurance Testing

The Alaska Division of Insurance has changed its policies for property and casualty insurance testing to conform with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Producer Licensing Uniformity Standards. It will no longer be offering part 2 of the property/casualty licensing exam beginning in August.

According to DOI, an individual seeking to obtain an insurance license is required to submit passing examination results for the lines of authority sought. The examinations are currently administered by DOI’s testing vendor, PearsonVue (previously known as Promissor Inc.). Existing practice requires an individual seeking licensure for P/C authority to submit passing examination results for part I property, part I casualty and part II P/C, combined. Part I examinations are specific to product knowledge while part II addresses state specific laws.

According to DOI, NAIC standard requires a state to offer examinations separately by line of authority. Because Alaska has combined the P/C part II examination, it must bifurcate the examination to create separate part II examinations for property and casualty. Therefore, starting in Aug. 1, 2008, the part II combined examination will no longer be offered. A person seeking licensure for property or casualty must register and take the separate exam (both parts I and II) for each line of authority sought.
