Wyoming’s Department of Employment, Research & Planning announced that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.2 percent in June to 3.6 percent in July. The rate has been slowly increasing from April 2008’s low of 2.6 percent, the Department said. July’s rate is the highest unemployment rate Wyoming has seen since November 2005.
From June to July, Wyoming employment fell by 4,100 jobs or 1.3 percent, the Department said. “That level of decrease is consistent with normal seasonal patterns. Employment usually decreases in July as public schools are closed for the summer. Large seasonal increases in construction (500 jobs or 1.7 percent), retail trade (500 jobs or 1.5 percent), and leisure & hospitality (1,700 jobs or 4.4 percent) were more than offset by seasonal job losses in government (including public schools, colleges, & hospitals; -6,800 jobs or -9.6 percent).”
Over the year, Wyoming added 7,400 jobs or 2.5 percent. The largest job gains were in construction, natural resources and mining, and government.
The Wyoming employment figures with August data is scheduled to be issued on Sept. 23, 2008.
