Where was this dog at when this police officer shot the dog? Why was the police officer near this dog? Was there a fence? Are labs this dangerous that this police officer felt he was going to lose his life?

Was it a one-shot-one-kill scenario? If so, this officer should be promoted for his expert neutralization of a moving target. Can I get this guy to come to my neighborhood to shut up some of the loud barking dogs on my street?

I hope this family wins – the city of Denver BANNED and EUTHANIZED all Pit Bulls living in city limits and this law is still on the books – geez NOW they’ll ban Labs too – I have dogs and the police have had to come to my house – my dog didn’t particularly like the officer however, the officer asked me to kennel the dog and i did so (obviously I no longert live in Denver or my dog would be dead) THIS story OUTRAGES me!!!

I agree with the comment about the homeless. If the dog was running away from the cop and got shot, obviously he wasn’t looking for food or for someone to pet it. If the homeless person asks for food and actually walks up to the officer, are they going to shoot as well? All Pits are NOT vicious and that didn’t sound like that it what was being said.

PLRB/LIRB has a distance learning module on animal libility which probably would benefit the plaintiff’s lawyer as well as the Denver Police department – Let’s hope the unnecessary death of a pet will make the petowner and police department both a little more responsible in handling and keeping them under contol. These dog incidents are close to 100% preventable if the dog owner acts responsibly.

Actually Double D 72, ive been assaulted, robbed , mugged, and injured in a car accident.

At no time did a police officer ever help me, and at no time was the person who committed the crime ever caught.

Cops just show up after things happen and take a poorly written sloppy report, they dont actually help you when something is actually happening.

Am I wrong? Of all your dealings with cops, how many are positive? Ive had zero.

Even when crimes are solved, that’s done by policy detectives, not cops.

Umm, it’s based on hard data. Unless you think that a corrupt cop might have snuck into the government’s data center and inserted illicit claims information into the system while on his way to Michael Vick’s house.

Let’s be honest with ourselves — the real culprit here is the Nintendo game “Duck Hunt” … because you know it and I know it, we all tried to shoot the dog once or twice when we were angry about missing the ducks. Shameless.

I think if all cops had to have a 4 year college education we might be able to find more respectable cops.

we all need police, not all of them are corrupt. how would you like to lay your life on the line whenever you encounter a work object? police personnel have to instantly access a situation and respond as quickly as possible, all while being human and capable of error.
the fact is that when you are in a critical position and do need help, the police will do their job and help you.

Thanks “just visiting”! If you read IJ and see all the corrupt insurance agents, and think, oh, they’re all corrupt, then that isn’t true either. The people who complain all the time about cops tend to be the ones causing trouble. I personally know an officer who works with my husband who was bitten on the hand by a rottweiler who attacked him. He did NOT shoot the dog, instead he grabbed it’s collar and held on until he got assistance. You can’t be weak to be an officer, so don’t tell me not all of them can hold off a strong dog, they can, if they try. I’m proud of my husband and all officers, and if it weren’t for him and others like him, most of us wouldn’t even be able to do our jobs nor have any.

Florida High Court Rules Police Can Be Sued Over Safety Checks
    February 2, 2009

E-mail this Article Post Comment Print this Article Article Reprints
A sharply divided Florida Supreme Court says law enforcement agencies can be sued over “safety checks” that go bad.

The justices ruled 4-3 in the case of an elderly woman who later died after Marion County deputies responding to a 911 call refused to summon an ambulance even though they couldn’t wake her.

Dissenting justices said the ruling would discourage law enforcement agencies from doing safety checks for fear of being sued.

“Police say when they opened the bathroom door, the Labrador-pit bull bit an officer on the right wrist. Police say the dog retreated then came back at the officers when a second officer shot it.”

Hopefully your husband is a good cop, lord knows we need them! Unfortuantely all are not. I live in Los Angeles just one house away from a group of “sub adults”, to use a nice term, that includes one cop. On the 4th of July weekend in 2007 and 2008 he fired a bottle rocket directly at my house. This is because my wife asked one of the other sub adults in the house to pick up their dogs poo a couple of times so the sub adults consider her a trouble maker for doing so. This year I will have a video camera set up to film him in the act (I’m confident he will do it again, he’s done it 2 years without consequences) and will send a copy to the Chief of Police and the mayor’s office. I won’t bother calling the police as the house is owned by a retired cop that had his brother urinate in front of my house because they were too lazy to go back into their house. The retired cop lets his son (won’t pick up the poo) daughter (had a child by the sub adult cop) and the sub adult cop live there rent free. After I’m through with all of them we will see if the sub adult still is on the force and maybe sue them all for interntional infliction of emotional distress. You can see why some of us are skeptical of the police. Unfortuantely, I don’t believe this to be an isolated incident and no way were we calling the cops until I get this on tape.

sounds like DC is a lawyer. just kidding!

in all seriousness about the cops; you have your good and bad! i have a very good friend who is a cop. great person, new dad, living life, not a crock of crap, but they do go through a lot! he works in a high crime neighborhood over an hour away and i was very suprised to see what he goes through. a ride-along was suggested by someone throughout…a VERY GOOD IDEA! i don’t want to see the blood, guts and gross things they have to see, the disrespect they get for doing their job and all of the other bs they go through.

cops, in general, aren’t too helpful where i live. they basically stop at the dunkins, sit in their cars, scratch themselves and yack on. then, when something happens, they might get there. i live in a city in which you can’t have loud music in your car, but the pit next door can wake your kids up all night long and that’s not a problem.

i would say about 1/3 of all cops are good cops!

Wow, Angelo, thinking that these details in some way strengthen your case really tells me a lot about you as a person, as well as your values and intellect.

    Lets look at what happened:

Cops come to house without a search warrant looking for a known criminal who they think might live there.

They have no way to get in, but the kids answer the door. So without a search warrant, they can convince the scared little kids to let them in. Who knows maybe they even bribed them with candy?

Next, the officers move on to the bathroom. They discover that a naked woman is in the shower in the privacy of her own home. You, know, the home with the locked door and the little kids in side.

Next, the innocent female in the privacy of her own bathroom in the United States of America (home of the bill of rights), along with her dog, who as far as we know, has never done anything wrong, is then approached by the officer.

Wow, these officers have guts! Are the guns drawn yet?

At that point things get a little fuzzy. Apparently the dog protects her owner from an intruder.

Dog bites cop on wrist. How much damage was done? Was it serious? Where are the kids? Should this be expected from a dog in the privacy of your own home? How would your dog react?

Next, officer continues to hassle naked woman in shower about a third party who does not live there. (how did you get in my bathroom again?) (this is legal?)

Next, dog attempts to protect owner in privacy of own home, not in China, not in Russia, in the USA.

Next, in front of children, in front of naked woman, dog is shot with large gun.

Pieces of flesh explode throughout the room, kids lives change forever, dog yelps in tortuous pain, is another shot needed?

Does dog die instantly? Does dog track blood through out house in its death throws?

    Where are the kids?

Cops apologize, because the guy they are looking for is not home, or doesn’t even live there.

    Cops leave.

Kids wont stop crying. Mom doesn’t know who to call to get the blood stains out or to dispose of the body.

    Lives are never the same.

And my god, you wonder why I don’t support what the police did?

I love this country and what it stands for. And you are a sick low life Angelo, and so are the cops that destroyed this family forever.

Ill never back down when it comes to being patriotic and defending my country and the constitution OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Mike…you are an idiot, but great story teller. Let’s try this one. Cops suspect perp is in the house off of a tip. Last I checked, you don’t need a search warrant to go after someone who has an arrest warrant (boy you are dumb). Kids let police in. At no time did it say how old her kids were. Your story assumes that they were small children. I am my parent’s kids and I am in my 30’s. So how do we know these kids weren’t older. We don’t. They search the home for the perp. They have to search the entire home for him and for their own safety. They open the door and the dog attacks and is a threat to attack again. They use force to stop that. Now the woman says that she doesn’t know the suspect. She may not, but how do we know. She may know him and be covering for him. That happens you know. She may not know him, but the GROWN kids do. My point is that you took a big leap, but didn’t look. I see that a lot around here. If some of you are lawyers, I wouldn’t hire you. If some of you are claims adjusters (which I did for years), you need some lessons in investigating. And a quick note. The insurance company I handled claims for was one of the major companies. They did research on dog bites all of the time. The breed responsible for most of the claims was a cocker. The dogs responsible for the most violent attach that we ever had was a shar pei.

    From the Denver Post:

“The dog had escaped Zowie [Drayer]’s backyard Monday and was about two blocks away in the alley near West 40th Avenue and Navajo Street.

When Zowie’s father went looking for Rocky, he found police with the 3-year-old yellow Labrador lying dead nearby.

He asked whether the dog had bitten anyone, and the officer allegedly barked, “Aren’t you glad it didn’t bite anyone?” Mudgett said. The family then had to pay $45 to recover the body.
Police had no statement about the shooting Thursday. Detective Sharon Hahn, a spokeswoman for the department, said only, “I heard a dog was shot.”

Mudgett said the officers told Zowie’s father the dog tried to bite three people, but police wouldn’t provide names of anyone allegedly attacked. The family said the police have refused to provide a report or dispatch records.

A police sergeant later amended the story, the family said, telling them the dog was acting “aggressive.” But a witness saw it differently.

Seferino Quentin said it was the officer who was acting aggressively.

“That dog was running for his life; the cop was chasing him,” he said, making a motion with his hand and arm to imitate a gunman taking aim.

To Mudgett, this issue is much larger than a dead dog. The shooting happened at 4 p.m. in the crowded neighborhood, as children were nearby after school.

If the officer’s bullet had missed, “a lot of bad things could have happened,” she said
