This is a private club. They can expell anyone they want. It is PRIVATE. If someone does not like the rules then don’t join and if you join you must obey the rules which this guy failed to do. So the goverment will now control our private lives. Hello socialism.

Maybe the men should have painted their skin black and called the club the United Nigro Golfing Club. Then there would be no lawsuits and everyone would be happy. Oh wait, that’s not segregation or racism if it happens that way.

“He questioned why he was expelled while other members who also spoke to the media remained.”

We don’t know what the other members had to say to the media, but if their comments would be considered “…derogatory or otherwise injurious…”, then why shouldn’t the club have to answer for selectively applying its rules?

If you had any idea what sum is represented in “…his substantial investments…” in the membership, I believe you might side with the wronged member.

Socialism is about control. The executive committee, or a few highly influential members of the committee, are exercising overriding control, because they do not appear to approve of another member’s comments while ignoring similar comments from other, better positioned members (ala, the Obama administration).

    Welcome to the new Amerika!

Private clubs should include/exclude members as they see fit. But, dude, you are paranoid. If this is socialism, what do you think of attempts by the prior administration to strengthen the powers of the Presidency, regardless of the intent of the framers of the Constitution (checks & balances)? That, my friend, sounds like an attempt at fascism…
A new America is preferential to the America we have had for the last 8 years.

Hey Dave, It doen nto mater what the others said. It is a private club. The government (courts) should have no say in the matter. Socialism is when the GOVERNMENT controls. The PRIVATE club should be able to control the membership and if someone does not like it DON’T JOIN OR QUIT THE CLUB.

Biff, do you even know what private means under the law?

Because its private you think they can keep out women? How bout blacks? Can they do illegal drugs or commit other crimes on the property in the name of privacy?

Discrimination is illegal, there are laws against it.

You are incredibly ignorant and uneducated.

Private doesn’t mean you can break a law.

The club may have discriminated against women but they did not discriminate against this guy because of race or gender. He violated the rules multiple times. Of course he throws out the “equal rights card” as a defense like everyone else these days. To equate this to real discrimination is ignorant.

Thats a good point. If you don’t like an organization, don’t join. There are many organizations that legally discriminate like the National Organization of Women, NAACP, etc.

In my town we have private schools. We have some all boys schools and all girls schools — are these “discriminatory” and “illegal”?

In my college town we had fraternities and sororities. Again many of them were boys only or girls only. Discriminatory? Illegal?

To another extreme, the KKK has a local meeting. I have no idea about such things but let’s go ahead and assume they do not allow women or any minorities — illegal? Discriminatory?

I do not think a private mens club is by definition discriminatory. It is a private club, not a public establishment. Your local neighborhood grill is a public establishment– any member of the public is free to dine there. Since it is a public establishment they cannot say “you’re a minority” or “you’re a woman” and refuse to serve them.

However, this sounds like a dues-required private membership. I’m not familiar with this particular club, but they are generally NOT open to the public. This makes them like the schools and fraternities–i.e. NOT open to the public.

In short how is this club any different from a private school or fraternal organization? What about the freemasons? What about the loyal order of moose? How about Knights of Camelot? Aren’t these ALL male-only private clubs?

To the law. If your an attorney I think you missed some classes. The club may have been within there rights, as we do not know the details. The reason the plaintiff has given may not be the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I can’t stand what this country is coming to. I am not racist or chauvinistic, and granted the article doesn’t say this, but I would bet that there is a woman’s lounge as well. My country club had a men’s grill and a women’s grill at one time. 3 (yes 3) women wanted to come into the men’s grill because it was a lot more fun, guys yelling and talking freely (no kids), guys being guys. they sued the club for this right, the club cowered and redesigned (and very poorly) the men’s grill to be part of the men’s locker room. FYI- The women’s lounge is the nicest room in the club, and overlooked the 1st tee.

I once asked my mom if she was ever offended when my dad was in the men’s grill (in the 1980’s). She laughed and said of course not, when she met him for dinner he would come out and they would eat in the dining room. That seems logical to me.

Instead of attacking a men’s only or a women’s only area, why not improve the family areas of the club, then everyone’s happy. Well….. you can’t please everyone.

I believe “The Law” has not responded because he/she has since realized how stupid he/she actually is. “The Law” is the type of moron who would use the freedom argument for his views but in turn would call someone a racist or bigot because they voice theirs. Typical bottom feeding liberal .

This typical of the liberal whiners which have permeated this State. Women can have the NOW Group and I bet I can NOT become a member due solely to my SEX. Why is this so unreasonable? If women want to be in the men’s section, I hope they like to hear four letter words. I would stand by the table of the women in the grill and include a four letter word for every adjective I used. They would eventually get tired of being so “offended” and get the heck out of the men’s grill. Too bad govt. has taken over all aspects of our lives and discrimation works in favor of any person EXCEPT WHITE MALES!

Why did the club back down then if they were in the right under the law?

Also, it must suck to be a woman when they are with a group of men entertaining a business client.

This entire discussion is akin to picking fly s.h.i.t out of pepper. One old idiot in the desert gets a bug up his wrinkled a.s.s and it becomes a legal issue. He signed on to be a member which included abiding by the club rules. I’m shocked the A.C.L.U. hasn’t stuck it’s big nose into this. This country is getting so petty about everything it makes me sick.

You probably aren’t old enough to remember the phrase, separate but equal. Your suggestion has a very bad history and connotation. I don’t agree or disagree with the suit since there isn’t really enough information to make an informed judgement and of course, nobody asked my opinion.
