Oregon Reports Nine Fatalities Receive Workers’ Comp Benefits in Q1

The Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services has released the Quarterly Fatality Report for the first quarter of 2009. DCBS has received notification of nine compensable fatalities accepted for workers’ compensation benefits for the first quarter of 2009, compared with eight at the same time last year.

According to the report, two of the injuries were in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry. One was in the utilities industry; two were in manufacturing; two were in truck transportation; and two were in state and local government.

The Quarterly Fatality Report presents compensable fatalities grouped by industry. Compensable fatalities are claims, accepted yb insurers, arising from a fatal occupational injury or disease that entitles workers and or their survivors to compensation. The current year’s data are preliminary until the final count is released in the spring of next year. Data excludes deaths of workers not subject to Oregon workers’ compensation coverage, such as workers who were self-employed, worked in Oregon for out-of-state employers, city of Portland policn and fire employees, or federal employees, DCBS said.
