Liberty Northwest, Montana Chamber Offer Workers’ Comp Program

May 15, 2009

Liberty Northwest, a Liberty Mutual Agency Markets regional company, and the Montana State Chamber of Commerce are offering Montana employers a new workers’ compensation group program with an emphasis on workplace safety and controlling losses.

Underwritten by Liberty Northwest, Montana Safety Choices prioritizes safety in the workplace through member-employers’ commitment to participate in intensive loss prevention and safety training with the insurer throughout the year. In turn, Liberty Northwest provides group members with competitive workers’ compensation rates and the potential for a group retrospective return on premium based on policy year safety results. Member employers also will receive a 5 percent premium credit for maintaining a qualifying drug-free workplace program during the policy period.

“We modeled the new program after our successful contractors’ group program which has demonstrated great results in reducing the number of workplace injuries, returning premium to members and yielding net rate reductions,” said Rick Burkhalter, regional sales manager for Liberty Northwest.

A report issued earlier this year by the Bureau of Labor Statistics placed Montana second nationally for fatality rates per 100,000 workers. “We can do better than that and we must do better,” Burkhalter added.

“We know one of the drivers of high workers’ compensation rates in Montana is our poor safety record,” said Webb Brown, president and CEO of the Montana State Chamber of Commerce. “The new Montana Safety Choices group program is our effort to address that problem.”
