California Insurance Department Aims to Aid Seniors

May 19, 2009

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced the launch of the California Department of Insurance Senior Information Center, an online tool for California seniors who have questions about insurance products.

“Studies have shown that number of seniors using the internet is rapidly increasing,” said Commissioner Poizner. “I am pleased that through this unique online tool, the Department of Insurance can share valuable information with this growing population of seniors. Together, we are helping seniors to make the best, most informed insurance decisions for their needs.”

Seniors today are facing an increasing number of obstacles when making decisions about insurance, CDI said. Changing laws, new choices and the prevalence of scams combine to make important insurance decisions even more stressful. Moreover, seniors are victimized more than any other demographic by life and annuity fraud scams. The best way for seniors to make informed and safe decisions is to become familiar with the facts, the Department said.

The Senior Information Center includes online information guides for various insurance products that are of particular interest to seniors. Additionally, the site provides advisories and notices to increase awareness about scams and unscrupulous agents who may try to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals. It also provides tools for seniors to check the license status of an insurance agent or company to make sure that they are authorized to do business in California.

This new online tool also provides a calendar of senior educational events throughout the state where CDI representatives often present useful information in person for members of the public who wish to attend. It also provides local public safety officials with the ability to post warnings and alerts when regional fraud activity is occurring.

In addition to reference guides about long term care and health insurance, the Senior Information Center can help connect seniors to other state agencies or organizations that also provide useful data and tips.
