I am a disaster educator that has been working with residents that face heightened risk of flooding. Last week I came into contact with two individuals in South King County that have been attempting to get Federal Flood insurance and have either been told by their agent they are not eligible (despite being actually on the Valley floor) or simply not being able to get a response from the agents listed on the floodsmart.gov site.

Since King County participates in the National Flood Program all King County residents may purchase flood insurance. You do not need to be in a defined flood zone to purchase flood insurance–which is good, since around 30% of claims originate from properties outside of defined flood zones.
