The Boise, Idaho, Police Department has adopted a new program to help young drivers stay safe, and potentially reduce their insurance premiums. Working with a grant from the Idaho Department of Transportation, the Police Department and other local agencies are offering its Alive at 25 program geared toward 15- to 24-year-olds.
The four and a half hour class is an interactive program that uses workbook exercises, interactive media segments, gropu disussions, role playing and short lectures to help young drivers develop convictions and strategies that will keep them safer on the road, the Department said. Upon completion, graduates will receive a diploma that can be presented to insurance carriers, some of which may lower rates for completion of the course.
Boise believes addressing young drivers is a top safety concern because vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for people in that age range, with traffic crashes accounting for 44 percent of all teen deaths in the United States.
