California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a workers’ compensation measure that would have required a physician who conducts a utilization review of workers’ comp medical treatment to be licensed in California (AB 933).
“Such a requirement would be inconsistent with how utilization review is conducted in other areas of medicine and not in line with best practices nationwide. The proponents of this measure have not demonstrated a need for this disparity in treatment,” Schwarzenegger said in his veto message.
Steve Suchil, western region assistant vice president for the American Insurance Association said his organization was pleased the measure was rejected by the governor. “We applaud the governor for vetoing a bill that would have added costs and delays to the treatment of injured workers,” he said. “It would have done nothing to improve the actual treatment of workers. Medical guidelines are generally consistent across all 50 states.”
