Hawaii Gov. Authorizes Raid of Hurricane Relief Fund

    I must correct an error in this article, it is an error that is very commonly repeated in the press. The Hurricane Relief Fund monies were NOT collected over the years merely from homeowners. The monies were assessed on many types of policies as a “tax”. Homeowner policies, General Liability policies, Commercial Property policies. Many business owners paid into this fund, and every time the legislature here considers refunding the monies, they also miss the fact that it wasn’t just homeowners paying. In fact, if you had a surplus lines homeowner policy, and also owned a business that was in surplus lines, you paid on both policies. Just a little fyi…
