A lawsuit filed Friday seeks millions of dollars in damages for more than 300 current and former city workers accusing the city of San Diego of pension fraud.
It stems from demands that the workers, including retirees, pay tens of thousands of dollars to keep their current benefits or accept a smaller pension.
The workers were asked to pay under a 2003 decision to alter a pension benefit program that ran up a $100-million deficit. That program allowed workers to buy extra years of pension credit but charged them too little.
An appellate court ruled in favor of the city in a similar case last year. City attorney’s spokeswoman Gina Coburn told the San Diego Union-Tribune the city believes it will win in the latest suit.
