Fire Destroys Townhouses in Santa Clara, California

Santa Clara, Calif., authorities say a fire that shot flames 10 stories into the air gutted three townhouses that were under construction, but did not cause any injuries.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the five-alarm blaze was reported around 10 p.m. on May 9 and attracted dozens of spectators. Fire Chief Bill Kelly says the first units to respond immediately called for backup, concerned that the blaze could spread to nearby townhomes that were already built and occupied.

About 50 firefighters responded. The blaze was brought under control about an hour later. No one was injured, and firefighters were able to keep the flames from the occupied homes.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known, but Kelly says it does not appear to be suspicious.
