Cell Phone Ban For New Mexico State Vehicles Considered

New Mexico officials are considering an outright ban on the use of cell phones in state vehicles.

The proposal is among nearly 50 changes that the General Services Department is considering implementing for state-owned vehicle use.

Drivers of state-owned vehicles can now use a hands-free device to talk while driving. But General Services Secretary Ed Burckle told the Albuquerque Journal that studies suggest a complete ban on cellphone use while driving would likely decrease the number of accidents.

Other proposed changes include a complete ban on private use of state vehicles and restrictions on gas card use. Representatives from several state agencies testified against the proposed changes, saying they could negatively impact employee productivity.

The General Services Department can change the rules without approval from the Legislature.
