Alaskan Mayor Signs Local Disaster Declaration

October 31, 2013

Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre has signed a local disaster emergency declaration due to the unseasonably heavy rains that have flooded many homes and roads.

KSRM reports that the declaration signed Tuesday has been sent to the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. There it will be reviewed and forwarded to Gov. Sean Parnell for consideration.

The Peninsula Clarion reports flooding that began in mid-September has affected areas from Seward to Anchor Point by flooding homes, septic systems and wells and washing out roads. Some residents have had to leave their homes.

Heavy rains last weekend pushed water levels to the highest seen since the event began and followed a period during which the water had begun to recede.
