An uncontained wildfire in New Mexico is approaching 5,000 acres is threatening several structures, ranches and campgrounds, and has forced some evacuations, according to fire officials.
The Signal Fire 10 miles north of Silver City in the Gila National Forest is now estimated at 4,687 acres, and while fire activity was significantly less than on Sunday, it continued to spread north and east, making short uphill runs, according to the interagency New Mexico Fire Information service.
Severe winds have died down to around 10 mph.
Fighting the fire are more than 500 personnel. Several air tankers, including a DC-10, supported firefighters on the ground by dropping retardant on the perimeter of the fire.
Today crews will construct a direct fireline along the northern perimeter and the Meadow Creek road, and secure fireline to the Signal Peak Lookout.
The fire is believed to be human caused, but an investigation is ongoing, according to New Mexico Fire Information.
