Lifejackets and lifeguards are not babysitters. If the parents were concerned about the safety of the pool then they should not have let their child swim without being with him.

Agreed. Parents are ultimately in charge of parenting. Where were they when they allowed their six-year old into an active wave pool?

17 lifeguards needed in a wave pool? Where were the 8 that were on duty when this happened?

I'm pretty sure they were busy says:

I would bet that they were pretty busy watching a gazillion other people at the wave pool at the end of May in Las Vegas. Besides, what parents are not with a six year old at a wave pool. Pretty poor parenting.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Even if my daughter were an excellent swimmer, I wouldn’t let her go in a wave pool by herself at that age. And I would prefer her to wear a life jacket, even with me by her side.

And yes, I’d feel the same way at the ocean….

I’m just angry these parents let a kid that young go in a wave pool like that.

We have seen a lot of the irresponsible parenting recently with the boy that fell into the Gorilla pit and the alligator snatching a child at Disney World. Kids will naturally wander and a parent has to be very vigilant.

I’m often astounded when I attend Cowabunga in Henderson. The irresponsible parenting is rampant! DO NOT rely on lifeguards to babysit your kids, that is not what they are there for!!

I remember being in the 6ft area of the wave pool when I see a little girl with no life jacket, silently crying beside me. She was desperately treading water and looked at me and quietly said, “help”. I picked up the little girl and we found a flotation device and I put her on it as I swam and dragged it to shore. I asked her if she saw her parents anywhere and she (still crying), said no. She said she was just going to stay in the shallow area and sit right by the lifeguard until they came back. I went back to my party but still kept an eye on the child. The parents were gone for another 10 minutes before they showed up! Had no one noticed that child (and it would be pretty easy with all of the rowdy kids and adults in the pool) disaster could have happened.
