No technology, no matter how safe, will be able to avoid all hazards from other unsafe drivers on the road. But self-driving cars are likely to be far, far safer than human-driven ones under most conditions. And safer than impaired (drunk, drowsy, stoned) drivers 100% of the time. Even though I like to drive, I like the promise of this new technology, bring it on!
