I expect the cameras are being installed in areas based on infraction and accident frequency.

Does Senate Majority Leader Kelvin Atkinson feel they should be installed in areas based on perceived ability to pay? If so, I think his priorities are screwed up.

The cities around me have been forced to remove their red light cameras. The companies that install them, typically shorten the yellow lights in order to get more infractions. Safety experts say the best way to improve safety at red lights is to extend the yellow lights. So the cameras increase risk at intersections rather than reduce it. The cameras are all about making money not safety.

Here in Calif. they have jacked the penalties up so high that most people can’t afford to pay them. This, in turn, clogs the courts with people seeking relief from the penalties. Heaven help you if you have a legitimate argument against a ticket, because it could take days to be heard in traffic court.
