I use informal methods to measure Water Evaporation Rate, from animal watering dishes.

And to measure in-Ground Water Evaporation Rate, from test seedlings in pots that have plenty of water (but the plants still wilt when it gets summery).

This is something I debate with other Fire Geeks – what’s more important, water evaporation rate, or temperature ?

There are various methods to measure the Burn State of the forest, to see whether it is Endothermic (as during the winter) or Exothermic.

4 days after our last rain on April 20, I did a controlled burn on April 24 and ALMOST ended up needing to call 9-11.

The transition in Burn Conditions: 4 days from sopping wet leaves to, near Red Flag conditions.

Caught me very much off guard.

Allowing for 1 week of summery weather conditions in the “Spring” time-frame, Geographic Summer started in Southwest Oregon on about May 1. We are at least 1 month ahead of schedule, fire season wise.

And we’re only about 60 miles North of the California border.

I believe 2019 will be a more difficult fire season than 2017, or 2018. In both Oregon & California.
