My guess is that Auto_Owners purchased this company to expand to California. The attraction to CIG is its strong California agency base. Auto-Owners can improve the ethical and intellectual capacity of the current CIG leadership through proper underwriting, pricing, reinsurance and agency management. I imagine once the Auto-Owners team implements these changes and improves the efficiency of the operations, they will be open for more business in California.
Auto-Owners never wrote business in California, so they are not “going back” to doing anything. This is an opportunity for them to expand. They already write in AZ so they pick up a few states where it’s always easier to acquire than build agency and product from scratch.
Auto-Owners saw an opportunity but clearly the fire risks need some help. That is the whole reason why CIG had to sell – fire losses. I’m sure that will all get straightened up pretty quickly. Don’t be shocked if a bunch of accounts get nonrenewed.
Auto-Owners is a large, well established, and well run company. They won’t make rash decisions. Auto-Owners bought Atlantic Casualty and affiliated with Concord companies in recent years and they are all doing well, so something’s working for them.
Now that Auto-Owners has taken over CIG they are non renewing homeowners policies in California because of the recent Cali Fires. I got my notice today. Called them and they don’t seem concerned that by non renewing my homeowners policy I will pull my 14 other properties and 3 auto/truck policies. They could care less about my 20+ years of business.
It appears that Auto-Owners has the financial strength and management expertise to fix this company.
Maybe they’ll come back into California and start writing again.
