California Couple Charged with Insurance Fraud After 4-Car Collision

Jamil Reinery Flores, 39, and Nelly Patricia Turcios, 32, a married couple from Fullerton, Calif., were charged with multiple felony counts of insurance fraud after allegedly misrepresenting when a car accident occurred in order to receive an undeserved insurance payout.

On June 6, 2016, Turcios was reportedly involved in a four-car collision in which she was determined to be at-fault. An investigation by the California Department of Insurance revealed Turcios’ husband, Flores, purchased an insurance policy for his wife after the accident occurred.

Flores did not disclose the accident Turcios had been involved in earlier that day prior to him purchasing the policy. Three days after the accident, Flores reportedly filed a claim with the insurance company stating the accident occurred after the policy was purchased, which Turcios corroborated.

According to a Fullerton Police report taken the day of the accident, the collision occurred at 4:11 p.m. Statements from witnesses further confirmed the accident occurred before the insurance policy was purchased at 5:19 p.m. the day of the accident. The alleged fraud resulted in an $85 loss to the insurance company, however a potential loss of $5,000 was averted due to the investigation.

Both Flores and Turcios self-surrendered on Nov. 9, 2020, to Orange County Superior Court. The couple is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 13, 2021. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting this case.
