When you read the full scope of “Defund the Police” it’s about using a portion of police funds to hire social and mental health workers tot respond to crises like these and domestic violence. Cases wherein if just someone with a gun shows up it can be taken as a threat, and the person with the gun responds to threats with a gun = someone dead. Often the police officer.
Doubt the carving fork would have been raised if just a social worker was there comforting the man and son. Suspect the social worker would have backed off if it was. Officer says he was stabbed (no evidence); why was he SO close? He didn’t follow his training. The officer brought the weapon to this scene. The many police officers I speak to would LOVE to have a social worker with them for these, or just responding alone since most of these don’t require a gun.
It’s idiotic to call the movement, “Defund the Police”. I’d call it, “Defend the Police” and use some of their funding to protect them by NOT forcing them to bring a gun to these scenarios.
