Re: Why am I still an Agent?

Sales is about creativing value. I know its easy to be negative but you won't survive in this industry or any sales industry with convenient excuses to be miserable. Right now you have an impoverished mentality and you need to turn that around. My agency is mostly referral and I can hardly keep up w...

Re: 1st Year as a Producer Stories

I have obtained several designations and highly recommend them to new agents. There is nothing wrong with experience alone, but I feel that to obtain book knowledge first and then stack experience on top of that is a better way to go. The agency owner used to poke fun at my taking designation course...

Re: Social Media

What would you all say are the greatest risks that an agent or broker has regarding his or her active participation in social media? A dissatisfied customer writes something unflattering on your Facebook wall or tweets about a bad claim experience. My question, once this does happen how should a si...

I don't know that I even want to get into this, I've had two situations in the last year that would just raise my blood pressure to rehash.

Re: Farmers vs. Independent

In all fairness, not all non-standard carriers are alike. Most of my non-standard carriers are just as easy to work with as my preferred carriers. I would exit the industry before I would go captive.

Its also important to remember that we're in a very soft market right now. Indications are that that will change shortly.

Re: Future of Independents

Sadly, "D", I have to agree with you. It doesn't mean I'm throwing in the towel, it means that I have to try and adapt and persevere. Traditional advertising doesn't work so well anymore, but we've found a few things that are helping. The biggest one is to advertise on other local business...

Re: WHO TAKES CASH AND DOES NOT REQUIRE MONEY ORDERS?

We take cash. We have an alarm system, security cameras, and a bolted down safe. No one has ever tried to break in. To a criminal though, I would think that the personal information contained in client files would be much more valuable. With that, ID theft would be very easy, and the loss would be m...

Re: Postcard mailers

postcards for non-standard auto are very expensive due to the minimal response to that method of advertising from any other product. 1% is a decent return as far as response, then you have to sell them insurance. It is very difficult to separate non-std risks using mailings. We have a lot of busine...

Re: Personal Lines Retention

If they do leave, make sure they know you'll welcome them back. Many will come back after a year of poor service elsewhere, and they will appreciate you even more. The point is, nobody really wants to go through the hassle of changing carriers and agents. It's a pain in the bum. Give they every rea...

Re: Postcard mailers

Progressive sends those out on our behalf, and we've gotten a handful or two of referrals from each batch that usually result in a successful sale. Quite frankly I'm surprised, I swear up and down at junkmail and rip it to shreds.

Re: Calling on non-payment customers

Well guys, I have been calling late payment policies in non-standard auto insurance for 30 years. We may not have called every client everytime and have never had a client suggest our lack of a phone call "caused him NOT to pay". Secondly, the legal notice of cancellation sent by the comp...

darnovak, what you really said was. that you should babysit clients I sure hope you are calling every policyholder for every notice received on every policy and documenting every conversation. Talk about an E&O nightmare situation. Regards, Gregcw, darnovak was being sarcastic about calling eac...
