Texas Property/Casualty Symposium to Focus on Insurance Industry Changes

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) will host its 22nd Annual Mid-Year Property & Casualty Symposium in Austin on July 17. Speakers include industry leaders from the Insurance Information Institute (III), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Texas insurance commissioner, all addressing changes taking place in the industry and the Texas marketplace.

III’s Dr. Bob Hartwig will start the program with an assessment of the property and casualty industry in Texas and how Texas compares to the rest of the country.

IIHS’s Dr. Adrian Lund will address the technological advancements in new automobiles and how those advancements are changing auto safety and losses.

For the political junkies, Texas Tribune’s Ross Ramsey will recap what happened in the Texas primary elections and what it means for the November state elections.

Thompson Coe’s Jay Thompson, a lobbyist for the industry, will talk about insurance issues that are likely to be discussed in the 2015 Texas legislative session.

ICT’s new executive director Albert Betts will moderate the afternoon panel discussion that includes Commissioner Julia Rathgeber, industry representatives and Texas lawmakers. Panel topics will range from recent increases in insurance related litigation, ongoing concerns with the Texas coastal wind insurance program, how technology is changing the business of insurance, industry trends and other issues affecting the industry.

During the symposium luncheon, ICT will announce the 17th recipient of the Raymond Mauk Leadership Award which is presented each year in recognition of someone who has made a difference for their employer(s), the industry generally, ICT or the business of the industry.

ICT will also recognize the college students who have received educational scholarships from the ICT Education Foundation.

The Symposium will be held at the Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol, 701 E. 11th Street.
