Mississippi University Opens Natural Disaster Study Center

December 1, 2008

Officials at Jackson State University in Mississippi have opened a Department of Homeland Security research facility.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held recently for the Center of Excellence for the Study of Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management.

The center will study the consequences of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

The Department of Homeland Security's Web site says JSU is working with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to find ways to mitigate damage and to promote recovery from natural disasters.

JSU is in the congressional district of U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee.
