Duke Lacrosse Players Trying to Settle Suit with Police

Three former Duke University lacrosse players falsely accused of raping a stripper eight years ago are trying to settle their lawsuit over how Durham police handled the case.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reported that lawyers for the city and the athletes told a federal judge on Friday that they’re working on settlement.

Judge James Beaty Jr. postponed court proceedings for two months to allow time for talks, adding he wants to resolve the case this year.

David Evans, Colin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann sued, alleging malicious prosecution by two police detectives and others.

The 2006 accusations by a black woman against white athletes at one of the country’s top colleges attracted worldwide attention.
