Senior Underwriting Manager - Property & Inland Marine

We currently have an opening for a Senior Underwriting Manager to join our Property & Inland Marine team. This position is accountable for the effective underwriting, pricing, development, and retention of profitable Property & Inland Marine business through managing all components of profit, loss and expenses for the NY/NJ & Southern New England regions. Based on the geography this individual will be responsible for, we are willing to base this position in our CT, MA, NJ or NY locations. While this position can be based in any of these locations, it requires travel to all of these areas.

Responsibilities:
1) Responsible for financial performance for Property & Inland Marine book of business, which includes: accident year loss ratio, premium plans (including new business, retention, and rate/exposure increases), commission targets, staying within staffing model, and oversight of field rollup budget.

2) Manages development of assigned Property & Inland Marine underwriting staff which includes: goal setting, skill assessments, staff selection/role alignment, performance appraisals of underwriters, feedback on performance of underwriting staff, continuing education, industry designations, negotiation and sales training, and building underwriting skills. Frequently communicates regional and local goals. Oversees training and personal development programs.

3) Reviews and analyzes underwriting quality and book management including: executing underwriting strategy (including portfolio management), self-auditing new and renewal business (eligibility, class fit, price to exposure, use of pricing tools, deductibles, insurance to value, analysis of losses, and well documented approvals of underwriting edits). Ensures compliance with standards and authorities are being met, identifies and analyzes book trends, and manages catastrophe plans. Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively.

4) Communicates and achieves service standards, measures service achieved and makes service an OneBeacon advantage. Assists with discrepancy resolution, and effectively utilizes the Operations Manager and Operations Service Specialist

5) Participates in agent presentation meetings, travels to key agents and participates in agency plans with underwriters and Branch or Segment Managers. Communicates and monitors agency action plans, agent training support, and assists underwriters with agency authority management as necessary.

6) Builds and maintains key agency relationships within the region. Keeps an active agency travel schedule and is a key producer of new business for the region. Assists the underwriting staff in the acquisition and retention of new business and key renewal accounts.

Requirements:
Expert knowledge of technical underwriting, pricing, and coverage issues. Must have proven analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communications, organization, and teamwork skills. Exceptional management skills, including informal training and formal development of staff. High level of negotiation/sales skills. Maintains strong professional knowledge of legislative issues, industry trends and marketplace issues within the region.

Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree. MBA or MS preferred. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years progressively responsible insurance industry experience in Property and Inland Marine Underwriting area. 3-5 years of supervisory/management experience. Professional insurance designation is preferred (e.g., AICPCU designation).

*We are willing to base this position in our CT, MA, NJ or NY locations. While this position can be based in any of these locations, it requires 30-35% travel to all of these areas.
