Setting the Tone

“New York, like California, Illinois, Delaware and a few other states

often sets the tone for development of regulation and law. There is no reason other states won’t follow suit, especially in light of New York’s decision.”

— Paul King, senior vice president and cyber practice leader at USI Insurance Services, on whether other U.S. states will adopt regulation similar to New York State’s Department of Financial Services (DFS) December regulation that prohibits insurance companies from denying commercial crime insurance coverage to New York businesses employing people with criminal convictions.

911 Call

“Lone Star Western Beef punished an employee for seeking emergency medical care for a seriously injured coworker. No worker should have to fear retaliation from their employer for calling 911 in an emergency, or taking other action to report a workplace safety or health incident.”

— OSHA regional administrator Richard Mendelson in West Virginia, on a federal lawsuit against the beef jerky maker for firing an employee when she tried to call 911 to help a coworker who had severed part of his thumb.

Play by the Rules

“Hard-working business owners across California get up every day and play by the rules, even when it isn’t always easy.”

— California Labor Commissioner Julie Su criticized a Santa Rosa, Calif., taxi company for not providing drivers with workers’ compensation coverage and for misclassifying them as independent contractors. The company agreed to settle a $522,300 citation for the offenses.

Open to Medical Marijuana

“If you get a prescription to use an opiate or you get a prescription to use marijuana, to me I think that’s the same thing … I would be open to that.”

— Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, a Republican, said he would consider a bill making it legal to possess cannibidiol oil, a medical marijuana extract.
