The number of South Carolina homeowners receiving grants of up to $5,000 each to help strengthen their homes against the high winds associated with hurricanes and other natural disasters. The S.C. Safe Home Grant Program was established in June as a part of the Omnibus Insurance Reform Act of 2007.

The average auto insurance rate cut by State Farm in Mississippi, where it insures 500,000 cars or about a quarter of the market. Other companies that received approval from the Mississippi Insurance Department to lower rates include Travelers by 0.5 percent and Southern United Fire by 0.03 percent. Allstate’s rates will go up 2.2 percent, effective Nov. 19.

The workers’ compensation rate decrease ordered by Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty after he disapproved the industry’s filing for a 16.5 percent cut for next year.

The hike in workers’ compensation loss costs for the voluntary market approved by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Jim Long for next April. Assigned risk loss costs will rise 4.1 percent.
