The workers’ compensation loss cost reduction approved for Maryland workers’ compensation carriers effective Jan. 1, 2009, thanks to a continued decline in frequency of claims. The decrease represents about $37 million in savings.

Value of settlement between paint factory owners and nearby homeowners in Danvers, Mass., whose properties were damaged when the factory exploded in 2006. The deal pays $1.4 million to about 100 property owners and $5.2 million to insurance carriers that have paid out more than $20 million in claims since the blast. The blast damaged 270 local homes and businesses; no one was killed or seriously injured.

Amount awarded by a jury to the estate of a Pennsylvania man killed by a drunken driver four years ago. The man who was killed, Jack Hynen, 55, was loading dogs into a car when he was struck by a woman who ran a red light after leaving a Harrisburg bar. Tests showed her alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. The other defendants were the club, its manager and the bartender. The club wasn’t insured.

Percentage decrease in the number of DUI-related deaths in New Jersey between 2006 and 2007.

The number of stop work orders issued by the New York Workers’ Compensation Board, less than 14 months after it was granted the authority to do so. The orders are issued to companies that fail to carry workers’ compensation insurance. A total of $7 million in penalties was also levied statewide against those businesses.

The percentage of votes won by Karen Weldin Stewart in the Democratic primary for the post of Delaware insurance commissioner. The former state insurance department deputy receiver will now face Republican John Brady in November. The winner in November will succeed incumbent Matt Denn, who is running for lieutenant governor.
