The default judgment against Tippah County upheld by the Mississippi Supreme Court. A man who contended that his elbow was broken during an arrest by county deputies in 2006 filed the case in 2007. The judge granted the default judgment because the county never responded to the lawsuit. The judge found that the county properly delivered the lawsuit to its insurance agent, but that that the lawsuit was never forwarded to the county’s liability insurance carrier. The insurance carrier has acknowledged its mistake and in discussions with the county over paying the judgment.

The magnitude of the minor earthquake that shook some north Alabama residents on Nov. 16. The quake centered around the Fort Payne area. It hit around 4 a.m. No damage was reported.

The amount in damages for alleged bad faith and deception in handling of hurricane claims sought by a Miami condominium association from its insurer, QBE Insurance Corp., and its Florida general managing agent, Florida Intracoastal Underwriters Limited Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brown and Brown, Inc. The lawsuit is the second by the association.

The number of volunteer firefighters that will now have accident and life insurance in Mississippi’s Lee County, where officials have agreed to spend more than $50,000 over the next three years to secure the coverage. Workers’ compensation does not cover volunteers’ pay at their regular jobs if a firefighting accident kept them out of work. The new policy includes a minimum $30,000 line-of-duty death benefit and up to $600 in weekly disability pay for up to five years.
