The Chubb Corp has named Richard G. Spiro executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Oct. 1. Spiro, 44, succeeds the retiring Michael O’Reilly, who will remain at company until the end of 2008 to assist in the transition.

Spiro joins Chubb from Citigroup Global Markets Inc., where he was a managing director in its financial institutions investment banking group. He held a variety of positions in Citigroup’s financial institutions group, including head of North America, global head of insurance investment banking and co-head of the insurance, asset management, exchanges and processors group.

Worcester, Mass.-based insurer The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. appointed Alan Crater vice president of its Northeast marine team. Crater, who has served in various leadership roles throughout The Hanover since 2004, will lead the Northeast marine team, which includes both the New England and Metro territories. He will continue to work out of the company’s Somerset, N.J. office.

In addition, Elaine Bartolini has joined The Hanover as assistant regional vice president for inland marine. She will assume responsibility for The Hanover’s New England territory and will work out of the headquarters in Worcester.

Bordentown, New Jersey-based New Day Underwriting Managers has promoted Jeffrey Slivka to executive vice president and Timothy Farrell to senior vice president of sales.

Slivka, who previously served as senior vice president, joined New Day Underwriting in 2005 after 15 years of developing environmental and professional liability underwriting expertise at Aon, Arthur J. Gallagher, and ECS Inc.

Farrell, who previously served as vice president, joined New Day Underwriting Managers in 2005 after more than a decade selling environmental insurance coverage and services for XL Insurance. He also held regional sales and marketing positions for CIGNA Property & Casualty Co. and Philadelphia and Maguire Insurance Group.

PIA Management Services Inc. promoted Matthew F. Guilbault to director of government and industry affairs. He will have the primary responsibility for all government relations and insurance industry liaison programs for the four-state Professional Insurance Agents associations in Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York State. He will be responsible for legislative objectives and strategies. Guilbault takes on the role held by Ellen Kiehl, who now serves as PIA’s senior research analyst.

William Stovin has been named president and chief operating officer of Markel International, the London-based subsidiary for the international operations of Richmond, Virginia -based Markel Corp.

Stovin was heavily involved in the reorganization of the company immediately after its acquisition by Markel in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed director of administration and in February 2008 was promoted to chief administrative officer. He replaces Gerry Albanese will return to the United States to assume a senior executive position with Markel Corp.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Brazil will become president of Markel International Insurance Co. Ltd. Brazil has been underwriting in the London market since 1989. At Markel International he became director of reinsurance in 2001 and for the past two years he has been responsible for the strategic management of Markel’s underwriting divisions.

Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. appointed Orlando D. Ashford senior vice president of human resources. Ashford will work with key executives of MMC’s operating companies to examine compensation, diversity and inclusion, talent management and leadership development. He joins MMC from the Coca-Cola Co., where he was most recently served as group director of human resources for Eurasia and Africa.

Canton, Massachusetts-based OneBeacon Professional Partners has appointed Susan Angelo senior vice president of managed care. Angelo will oversee all product, business development and underwriting strategies for managed care nearly 20 years of experience within the managed care professional liability industry. Most recently, she was vice president and product line manager for managed care liability at Lexington Insurance Co., an AIG member company.

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York has promoted Regina Wright to assistant vice president of finance. Wright most recently served as director of finance. In addition, Wright is the latest recipient of IIABNY’s 2008 distinguished Service Award, given annually for “unselfish sacrifice” of time and effort to better the New York state insurance community.

Brian Neary has joined insurance broker Lockton in Washington, D.C. as a vice president and producer in the firm’s employee benefits consulting practice.

Prior to joining Lockton, Neary worked with Mercer Health & Benefits in Washington, serving as a senior consultant and practice leader during his 11 years there.

Pittsburgh-based insurance firm Lloyd Inc. has hired William F. Wakeley as director of business operations.

Wakeley has 20 years of industry accounting and business experience and has held management responsibilities in both public and private company environments.

The firm also announced the promotions of Tracey Spearman and Leslie Thomas. Spearman, the firm’s commercial lines account executive for the past two years, has been promoted to account executive/assistant vice president. Thomas, who joined the firm 11 years ago, has been promoted to broker administrative assistant.
