North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin has announced he plans to seek re-election in 2016.

“I remain committed to protecting the people of North Carolina through fair and reasonable insurance regulation, while also promoting a vibrant and competitive business community,” said Goodwin. “My experience as Insurance Commissioner has shown me even more how much insurance issues affect people. I want to continue standing up for all North Carolinians.”

Goodwin, a Democrat, was first elected to the office of Insurance Commissioner in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012 by a larger percentage.

His accomplishments as Commissioner, according to Goodwin’s reelection announcement, include:

North Carolina has the lowest car insurance costs in the country. A 2015 study shows drivers pay 41 percent less than the national average. Goodwin also persuaded the legislature to provide greater flexibility with a bypass of the N.C. Rate Bureau.

North Carolina has also cracked down on insurance fraud since Goodwin took office in 2009, with more than 1,500 arrests for insurance-related crimes.

North Carolina’s growing captive insurance industry has allowed more than 150 new businesses into the state in the last two years.

Goodwin–a native of Hamlet, N.C.–represented Richmond, Scotland, Montgomery and Stanly counties during four terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives and was appointed Assistant Insurance Commissioner and Assistant State Fire Marshal prior to being elected Insurance Commissioner. Goodwin serves on the NAIC Executive Committee.

The Main Street America Group, a super-regional property/casualty mutual insurance holding company based in Jacksonville, Fla., has appointed Chris Cox to president of Old Dominion Insurance Co., its primary writing company and brand in Florida and Georgia.

The appointment of Cox to Old Dominion president was approved by the company’s board of directors at its fall board meeting. Old Dominion is a wholly owned member company of Main Street America.

In addition to Florida and Georgia, several Main Street America commercial lines and personal lines products are underwritten through Old Dominion in its New England Region, Northeast Region and Southeast Region states. However, Cox’s appointment as Old Dominion president does not impact any of the company’s regional operations.

Cox, who joined Main Street America in 2008 as a personal lines product manager, was appointed president of its newly formed Florida Region in March 2015. Cox has nearly 25 years of property/casualty industry experience, including multiple roles at Nationwide Insurance.

MarketScout, the national electronic insurance exchange and specialty MGA headquartered in Dallas, has expanded its Private Client Solutions (PCS) E&S underwriting division with the hire of Crystal Wittwer.

Wittwer has over 15 years of industry experience and will serve as an underwriter for the E&S division of PCS.

Prior to joining MarketScout, Wittwer spent 12 years with Hull & Company in Charlotte, N.C., where she was most recently a senior underwriter. Wittwer will be based in South Carolina.
