IIAANY Urges Adoption of 30 Day Accident Reporting

August 24, 2001

The Independent Insurance Agents Association of New York has come out strongly in favor of reducing the current 180 day period for filing an accident report to 30 days.

The IIAANY feels that a prompt reporting requirement will help stabilize auto insurance costs by reducing opportunities for insurance fraud. It wants basic accident details, including any injuries, to be reported within 30 days of the accident. Additional time would then be given for the presentation of supplemental information, such as medical reports.

Insurers complain that they frequently receive claims forms and bills before they have any reports concerning the accident, which makes it more difficult to investigate the circumstances and leaves them open to “insurance fraud perpetrators who prey on accident victims.”|”iiaany, urges, adoption, of, 30, day, accident, reporting
