N.Y. Couple Arrested on Fraud Charges

New York Superintendent of Insurance Gregory Serio announced the arrest of Edwin and Doreen Smith of Webster, N.Y. on charges of insurance fraud and attempted grand larceny.

The couple allegedly submitted a fraudulent insurance claim after their home was burgled. On Jan. 5, 2001 the Smith's reported to the Webster Police Department that their home had been burglarized while they were out for the evening, and several items were stolen from the garage. The Smith's submitted a claim to Security Mutual Insurance Company for approximately $21,000. The property allegedly stolen included bicycles, golf clubs and golf bag, and a tool chest with tools. The investigation revealed that the receipts they submitted in support of their claim were fraudulent.
