Pa. Department Adds Agent Search to Web Site

September 22, 2004

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Diane Koken announced that the department’s web site has a new search feature for both consumers and insurance producers licensed in Pennsylvania. The new “licensed producer” search gives consumers the ability to verify that they are dealing with an individual licensed with the Commonwealth.

“We always stress that knowledge is a consumer’s best policy,” Koken said. “Unfortunately, there may be individuals out there who are misrepresenting themselves as licensed producers, which in effect victimizes consumers on two levels – one with the false sense of security that they are dealing with a licensed producer and two because a consumer may purchase a policy for an insurance product that may not even exist. With this new search tool, consumers will have no doubt as to whether or not their producer has a valid license in Pennsylvania.”

Consumers can search by license number, last name, business name or by city and state. The search results will display what types of insurance the individual and/or business are licensed to write, as well as when the license expires.

Another enhancement to the website is the ability to search for enforcement actions by last name.

“Although our enforcement actions were always available on the website, it was difficult to quickly find the information you wanted,” Commissioner Koken noted. “Now, enforcement actions are listed alphabetically, which means consumers can quickly and easily look up the name of an insurance producer or insurance company.”

The new insurance producer search gives licensed insurance producers the capability to verify that their licensing information is correct and up to date, according to Koken.

Consumers can access the new searches by logging onto http://www.insurance.state.pa.us and clicking on the “Find an Insurance Producer” or “Find a Business Entity” links on the right hand navigation bar.
