Michael Browne, president and chief executive officer of Pennsylvania-based Harleysville Group Inc. and Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania.
Browne was named Harleysville’s chief executive officer in 2004 and
president in 2005. He served as non-executive chairman of the board from 2003 until he was named to his current position. He has been a director of Harleysville Group since it went public in 1986, and was elected to the board of Harleysville Mutual in October 2003.
Before being named Harleysville’s president and CEO, Browne was head of the international insurance practice group at the law firm of Reed Smith LLP, in Philadelphia, a position he had held since 2001.
Browne joined Reed Smith as a partner in 1983, and he served as managing partner of its Delaware Valley regional offices from 1993 to 2001. He was the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1983.
