Granted that a road built in the early 1900′s will not meet today’s transportation needs, it is still the responsibility of the driver to handle the vehicle in a responsible manner. Traveling at excessive rates of speed, texting, and other common practices are irresponsible behavior. The toll that was exacted of this family is extreme, and will hopefully remind us all to drive more carefully, as if our lives are at stake — because they are!
I agree Lynda, These roads have been designed with the speed limit in mind. It was the driver’s fault for being unable to handle her vehicle at a speed which was several miles over the limit. She was going almost 20 over the limit. That is 4 points on her license. Its her fault. I have driven that parkway many times, I have no complaints except on the small metallic bumps going south towards Tremont/Cross Bronx.
Overall, I agree with both Lynda and Gitmo. However, one article I read stated that although the driver was traveling at approximately 70 mph in a 50 zone, that she was probably just going with the flow of traffic. The road may have been designed with a 50 mph speed limit in mind, but if everyone goes 70 and the police make no effort to curtail that behavior, then it may be more dangerous to obey the law by slowing down.
May have been going with the flow but if I was in the lane next to her I’d rather have her go over the edge than bounce off the rail and carom into me. Could have even more deaths in this one.
Take an unskilled driver operating a mongo van way over the speed limit and you get a fatal accident. The driver was at fault.
