Virginia’s Sales-Tax Holiday on Hurricane-Prep Items Begins Today

May 25, 2012

Virginia residents can prepare for the upcoming hurricane season and save money at the same time.

The Virginia Department of Taxation says the state’s sales-tax holiday on emergency items such as batteries, flashlights, tarps and first-aid kits runs from today, May 25, through next Thursday.

During the period, emergency items that cost $60 or less will be exempt from the 5 percent state and local sales tax. Generators that cost $1,000 or less also are exempt.

Retailers can choose to exempt other items from sales tax.

A complete list of tax-exempt products can be found at the tax department’s Web site at www.tax.virginia.gov.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
