Insured, Uninsured Sandy Victims Try to Get Through

    Wow the two renters that had not bought insurance said that they were hoped to get funds from FEMA — excuse me? You didn’t buy insurance and you just want the Federal Goverment to pony up with a check? If the landlord didn’t buy coverage for property that wasn’t his (why would he), they will learn the valuable lesson that in the grown-up world you need to take care of yourself.

    This 81 year old man should begin mitigating his damage. He stated he is waiting for an adjuster to approve coverage before having a contractor or restoration company go to his home. So am I to understand if it is not covered that he is just going to leave a flooded home as is? I will never understand why people wait until they “know their covered” before proceeding with mitigation. If your home is filled with water, you better get to work regardless if there is coverage.. otherwise your loss will be much greater.

    I still remember when we had floods in the Laingsburg (South Africa) in the 1980’s… The flood water hadn’t subsided yet.. The company I worked for sent company representatives and loss adjuster’s out in little motorboats, with a list of insured’s in the affected area and their sums insured. If the house was under water, they would then and there issue a cheque for the full amount and give it to the home owner. Life was somewhat simpler back then… All I did was put a tick against those that were paid in full and fax or telex re-insurers a list every so often and that was that, refund by re-insurers shortly afterwards! And that was way before internet and emails that have supposedly sped things up…. Although compliance and regulations are necesary it was a lot easier to handle catastrophes then in some ways…
